Join us during Lent for a study on PRAYER, Does it make a difference?

How do we pray?  Why do we pray?  What motivates and inspires us.

During this holiest time of the Christian year we can develop a closer prayer relationship with God through this inspirational study.

Starting March 12th & 13th and continuing through the end of Lent (Sat, Apr 23).

Saturdays at 4:00 pm and Sundays at 9:15 am

Barry Ketcham grandson of Doris Landis, son of Denise Ketcham, who was raised in this church, has Asberger's Syndrome, a type of autism.  Barry has been chosen to be the child spokesperson for their fund raiser walk in April in Wichita.  This walk is sponsored by Heartsprings and is a state wide fund raiser.

Why We Walk…We walk to make a difference! We are walking in the 2011 Autism CARE Walk at Heartspring to support children and families affected by autism spectrum disorders. We will walk to make a difference on April 2, 2011! The CARE Program is an exceptional program that provides much needed services and support to families and children in our area. By walking and helping to raise money in support of Heartspring's CARE Program, we can make sure that families affected by autism spectrum disorders can continue to receive the support and services that they so desperately need.

Did you know?  Autism costs the nation more than $35 billion per year, a figure expected to significantly increase in the next decade. More children will be diagnosed with autism this year than AIDS, Diabetes and Cancer combined! Despite ongoing research there is still no cure for autism. Autism now affects 1 in 110 children, and 1 in 70 boys.

A 9-session course on Christian parenting principles including topics such as building strong relationships, developing your child’s full potential, discipline versus punishment.

What is God’s desire for your child’s life, and how can you and God together help them deal with today’s pressures and fulfill their purpose.

Meeting times are still flexible, probably meeting Sunday evenings during May and June.

There will not be Big Kids' Club this week!

Ash Wednesday Service is this Wednesday March 9th at 7pm. The first day of Lentand occurs 46 days (40 days not counting Sundays) before Easter. It is a moveable fast, falling on a different date each year because it is dependent on the date of Easter. It can occur as early as February 4 (February 5 on leap years) or as late as March 10.

Ash Wednesday derives its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of adherents as a sign of repentance. The ashes used are typically gathered after the Palm branches from the previous year's Palm Sundayare burned. The minister who presides at the service to make the sign of the cross, first upon his or her own forehead and then on those of congregants.

Program:  Loren Halifax, co-anchor for Fox 4 who has recently been in Haiti, will be our speaker for the March meeting.  Everyone is welcome to come hear her since Haiti is so close to our hearts.  If you plan to come for lunch, please call the Church by March 9th.  Lunch will be at 12:30 and the cost is $2.00.  The program will be at 1:15.  Plan now to be a part of this informative program.

These students will be using their Spring Break to make a better life for someone.  Please bring any of the following items to the church by March 25th.  The Outreach Committee has made this one of our commitments for March.  Let us make Zach a spokesman for Antioch Community Church.

Items Needed:  25’ tape measures, backpacks, school supplies, adult soccer shoes, adult diapers, anti-fungus cream, sewing machines in good working order, AAA, AA, C & D size batteries.

MLM's work belongs to people all over the Greater Kansas City Area. Anchored by congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, and the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, a total of more than 100 congregations from 10 denominations support our work. We receive funding from these congregations, from federal, state, and local government programs, and from many local individuals, foundations, and corporations.

A 501(c)(3) nonprofit social service agency, Metro Lutheran Ministry (MLM) helps disadvantaged people of all races, religions and nationalities in the urban areas of Jackson, Clay and Platte Counties in Missouri and Wyandotte and Johnson counties in Kansas. MLM uses a holistic approach with strengths and outcome-based counseling and case management, which guide receptive clients toward greater independence and self-reliance.

A History of Service

Forty-seven Lutheran congregations in Kansas City established Metro Lutheran Ministry in 1971 with the motivation to minister to the poor, older adult and disabled. Throughout its 34-year history, MLM has been known as one of Kansas City's pioneering social service agencies, sponsoring new and innovative housing and emergency assistance programs, which became successful, separate non-profits.

MLM founded Harvester's Food Bank, the central resource and distribution center for Greater Kansas City's food pantries and emergency food suppliers, Sheffield Place (transitional housing for women and children), and Parvin Estates, a low income, affordable apartment complex in North Kansas City. For 30 years, MLM has operated two annual Christmas Stores in Wyandotte and Jackson counties. Serving over 1,800 families with Christmas gifts, this endeavor has grown to be the second largest gift giving effort in the metro area.

In just one year, through MLM's Community CARE programs and older adult Services, 20 full-time personnel and many dedicated volunteers answered more than 140,000 calls for emergency assistance. Nearly 57,000 people from over 20,000 families (duplicated count) received emergency care services. A total of 357,589 meals were provided for 22,847 people (a 56% increase over the previous year), 99,467 pieces of clothing were given to 5,941 people (a 58% increase) and 60,685 requests (an increase of 29%) were received for emergency utility or financial assistance.
